Every year on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine commemorates the victims of the 1932-1933 Holodomor and the 1921-1923 and 1946-1947 mass famines. In 2024, 23 November will be the day of commemoration for the victims of the famine.
The artificial famine organised by the Soviet regime – Holodomor – was the largest mass extermination of the Ukrainian people, resulting in the starvation deaths of at least 4 million Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian Association in Finland is organising a ceremony in memory of the Holodomor victims on 23.11.2024 at 18:00 at the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki and invites citizens to light candles at the memorial to past generations and those buried far away. The event in Helsinki will also be attended by Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress.
After the candle-lighting, we invite everyone to participate in ecumenical prayer at St. Henrik’s Cathedral, St. Henrik’s Square 1A, 00140 Helsinki, Finland
We ask everyone to remember the millions of lives Ukraine lost in the Holodomor and, as darkness falls, to light memorial candles on your window sills – in your own home or office. After all, every light in the window is a testament to our grief, our memory and our faith in the future.
