UKRAINIAN PROGRAM AT THE HELSINKI BOOK FAIR
24-27.10.2024
Ukraine is strongly represented at this year’s Helsinki Book Fair, the program of which includes five Ukrainian events, as well as its own stand of the Ukrainian Association in Finland, where you can find Ukrainian literature, in particular translated into Finnish, from the following publishing houses: VYDAVNYTSTVO, Vikhola, The Old Lion Publishing House, Rodovid, Teza Publishers, Vivat.
Two Ukrainian writers will take part in the program of the fair. Jevhenija Kuznjetsova will present her novel “The Ladder” about Ukrainian refugees. Another guest is Yaryna Chornohuz, a military officer and poet laureate of the Shevchenko Prize, whose poems will be read in Finnish by Finnish writer Laura Lindstedt, laureate of the Finlandia Prize.
The Ukrainian program will also be supplemented by the presentation of the Finnish translation of the art book “BOHOMAZOV 1911: Following the Ukrainian artist in Finland”. Nataliya Teramae‘s book tells about the artistic research trip to Finland in 1911 by Oleksandr Bohomazov (1880–1930), who is considered one of the most outstanding Ukrainian modernists. Nataliya reconstructs this journey based on Bogomazov’s writings and letters and his own research. The book contains familiar Finnish landscapes, such as the rapids of Imatra, the waves of Saimaa and the pines of Punkaharju, drawn by Bohomazov. Bohomazov’s works are presented at the exhibition “In the Eye of the Storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s” at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
The Ukrainian program of the Helsinki Book Fair is organized in cooperation with the Ukrainian Book Institute, the Ukrainian Institute, PEN Ukraine and Suomen PEN.
